This beautiful, triangular shaped cavity lined with gemmy violet Fluorite crystals could be from no where else but Frazer's Hush mine, between the villages of Rookhope and Allenheads. Although closer to Allenheads, the location is usually given as Rookhope because Allenheads is just over the county border and in Northumberland. Frazer's Hush is now one of the most famous localities in the entire Weardale district, but is a relatively new mine compared to most, having begun only in the early 1970's. The mine is now long since closed and the workings entirely flooded. This showy large cabinet specimen displays intergrown violet cubic crystals averaging 7 to 10 mm on edge, with some crystals to about 1.5 cm. Characteristic of Frazer's Hush fluorite, all crystals have a brilliant glassy lustre and in direct daylight these naturally fluoresce intense blackcurrant purple. Under LWUV the crystals fluoresce bright lavender white. This is an excellent example of Fluorite from Frazer's Hush and ex. the Harris Collection.
