Dioptase
Although categorised at Tsumeb as 'common', finds of the quality and crystal size displayed in this specimen were few and far between. It is most probable this fabulous large thumbnail was recovered from the second oxidation zone between levels 29 and 32 during the 1970s. At the time, Tsumeb Dioptase was plentiful on the market and it was all too easy to become complacent about its quality and apparent availability. How times change! Enveloping a core of pinkish-white Dolomite mixed with what is likely pale apple-green Duftite, lustrous glassy Dioptase crystals completely hind the matrix. The crystals are an intense emerald-green and although difficult to describe, are perhaps better termed a chromium-emerald green. Internal plains and hidden crystal faces reflect incident light back out, giving the centres a look of crumpled metallic-green foil. The largest crystal, which sits at the crest of the specimen, measures approximately 2.3 x 1.3 x 1.0 cm. A stunning example of Dioptase from Tsumeb, mounted on a clear acrylic base.
