A magnificent, large cabinet display specimen of the Eisenkiesel variety of Quartz, richly covering a bed of flattened, very deep plum-purple Fluorite crystals. This amazing specimen is from the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District of Upper Palatinate in Bavaria, Germany. The Quartz crystals average 4 to 7 mm across with the same variation in height. They form stubby crystals, with minimal prism faces and are dominated by hexagonal pyramidal faces forming the majority of each individual crystal. The colour of the Eisenkiesel is caused by a thin surface film of Hematite-impregnated Quartz, of a uniform, burnt reddish orange. This outer coating is highly lustrous and where occasionally missing, reveals a dark smoky interior. This is a wonderful example of Eisenkiesel Quartz from the ancient mining district of Wölsendorf in Germany; you would go a long way to find a better example!
