Tucson, Arizona, USAThe headframe at Groverake mine appeared just a stone's throw from that of its more famous neighbour, Frazer's Hush mine; the two being separated by only 500 m. Groverake mine produced far fewer minerals of specimen grade, but those that did survive the crushers now make magnificent specimens. This very large cabinet specimen is a double-sided beauty and could well be displayed with either side uppermost, giving quite different appearances. What would be the more likely display face is that of large intergrown single Fluorite crystals to 4 cm on edge, of semi-transparent greyish-green crystals with translucent purple interiors, all heavily coated with glassy, highly lustrous stubby Quartz crystals. In direct (although dull) sunlight, the crystals fluoresce a deeper purple, but not to the level we know from the mines in eastern Weardale. The opposite side (likely considered the base) has a sucrosic coverage of 1 mm colourless-grey Fluorites, punctuated with fine cubic crystals to 2.5 cm on edge. A superb specimen of Fluorite and gemmy Quartz from Groverake mine. Please note this specimen is likely to carry an additional postage charge due to its weight and size.
