Smoky Quartz
A beautiful and highly aesthetic bed of gemmy terminated Smoky Quartz crystals from Gletschhorn, a mountain in the Furka Pass Area of Uri, Switzerland, with an elevation of 3,305 m (10,843 ft) and situated in the far mid-south of the country. It is because of mineralisation like this that the term Alpine-type deposit is applied all around the world, where Quartz crystals and often other minerals have crystallised in clefts or fractures. A tradition in Switzerland and adjacent Alpine countries is for specialist climbers to explore for such cavities and then carefully extract and transport them back to the valleys below for sale. Gemmy pale clove/sherry-brown smoky Quartz crystals to 3.5 cm tall cover a matrix of Feldspar mixed with Quartz, to make a large miniature of stunning quality. The Quartz is optically perfect with, no pun intended, crystal-clear clarity, aptly demonstrated by reading the smallest of printed text through crystal with no impingement at all. The Quartz forms regular hexagonal prisms with normal pyramidal terminations, although the largest crystal displays an interesting, stepped dislocation on one face of its termination. This is a gorgeous Alpine Smoky Quartz group from the Gletschhorn in Switzerland.
