A rare specimen from the Lubec Lead mine at Lubec in Washington County, Maine, USA. Clusters of lustrous prismatic light brown Pyromorphite crystals of up to 1 cm, display a tapering habit and parallel growth on the prism faces. The Pyromorphite crystals are formed on a matrix of metallic light golden Pyrite and white Quartz. Specimens from this old lead mine very seldom appear on the market and, speaking personally, this is the first I have seen. This mine was discovered on the western shore of South Bay, an extensive body of water connected to the sea in the far north of Maine, well away from the more famous gem pegmatite region in the south. The Lubec Lead mine, also known as Solomon Thayer mine, produced copper, gold, lead, silver and zinc and operated from 1832 to around the late 1860s or early 1870s. This is a fabulous miniature of well crystallised caramel brown Pyromorphite from this rare locality
