Description
There are many collectors who specialise in Cassiterite, a tin oxide, and if you are one looking for something a little bit different, then look no further. From Santa Maria del Oro at San Luis Potosi in Mexico, this is such an unusual habit of the species many an experienced collector would not even recognise it as Cassiterite. A small cabinet specimen, the Cassiterite forms in the botryoidal habit as vertically elongated domes up to 2.4 cm in diameter with the tallest a little over 3 cm. The surfaces are composed of 1 mm diameter silver-black framboids with a metallic lustre. A pale reddish-pink mineral lightly dusts in between the mounds and around their sides, giving a great contrast to the metallic Cassiterite. The base is a porous creamy carbonate matrix over which the Cassiterite has been deposited. A fabulous and most rare habit of Cassiterite.
