Pyromorphite
One of the qualities which makes this Pyromorphite from Roughton Gill so attractive is when studied, its difficult to decide whether it’s green or yellow! Its colour must lie at the tipping point at which we perceive a particular colour. Under a loupe the Pyromorphite is seen to form regular hexagonal prisms with flat pinacoids. When crystals are more horizontally orientated they form double terminations. Generally the crystals are bright lime green yet often grade to acidic yellow towards their terminations. The Pyromorphite covers a Quartz matrix , although its habit appears more like bladed baryte than Quartz. This Quartz texture is common at Roughton Gill and is sometimes described as a “hacked quartz matrix”; an old miner’s term I presume. It’s a showy specimen with great colour and bright lustre from this area of the Caldbeck Fells in Cumbria, England.\n
