Elbaite - Tourmaline on Quartz

Coronel Murta is a municipality rich in pegmatites, located in the northeast of Minas Gerais state in Brazil. As is the nature of pegmatites in this region, this is rich in Elbaite Tourmaline and here we have a beautiful example attached to a milky Quartz crystal with multiple terminations. The Elbaite measures 3.3 x 1.7 x 1.7 cm and lies half-embedded in the Quartz and horizontal to its long axis. The Elbaite prism is translucent cerise pink, containing small gemmy zones interlayered with veiled wispy structures within the crystal. Within 5 mm of the termination the Elbaite becomes almost entirely gemmy and colourless, with just a hint of pink. It terminates in a flat pinacoid with a final 1 mm cap of intense deep cerise pink. The pinacoid is mirror-smooth with a glassy to mildly waxy lustre and feint linear growth patterns. Two much smaller, part Elbaite crystals are partly embedded in the Quartz on the opposite side. The Quartz terminates in an aesthetic set of multiple terminations as regular hexagonal prisms with symmetric pyramidal tops, all aligned epitaxially to the main Quartz body.
