A large, almost pure specimen of coarse Sphalerite crystals from the "Alston Moor" area. The obvious candidate would be somewhere like Smallcleugh mine, but it is impossible to say for certain. The complex, modified crystals of Sphalerite reach about 1.5 cm across, are almost black, but display a good, bright, submetallic lustre. Some of the crystals show slight signs of bruising but this does not distract from the overall way that the specimen displays. An old note accompanying the specimen indicates that it came from Arlington Court in 1950. This suggests that it might have some heritage from a stately home collection. Other specimens from "Arlington Court" are recorded in Arthur Kingsbury's collection at the Natural History Museum, London. A great large British Sphalerite from the classic English area for this mineral.
