Tourmaline var. Elbaite in Lepidolite
Highly reflective, lilac-mauve books of Lepidolite mica form a rectangular matrix on top of which is horizontally embedded a rich chrome to lime-green, 3.5 cm long Elbaite crystal from the Xanda Mine at Virgem da Lapa in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Lepidolite crystals measure to over 5 cm wide and form a solid, densely packed mica 'book' whose upper surface-displays a crystallised rind some 3 to 4 mm thick. Euhedral crystals of pale lilac Lepidolite cover this rind and provide a perfect foil to the deep gemmy green hues of the Elbaite. About half the width of the Elbaite is embedded within the Lepidolite and the internal structure of the crystal is a complex mix of gemmy zones separated by flaws and re-healed fractures. A choice Elbaite addition for any Tourmaline or gem collection.
