Fluorite
A classic Fluorite from the Rosiclare District of Illinois, forming intergrown cubic crystals measuring to 5 cm on edge with a rich amber yellow body and outer pale lilac-lavender zone, very apparent when the crystals are viewed face on. The prism edges and corners are razor-sharp, while the faces are smooth with subtlety undulating growth patterns. The large cubes have smooth faces while the smaller cubes (to about 2.5 cm on edge) tend to be more blocky, composed from smaller, similarly aligned Fluorite crystals. The crystals are wonderfully glassy with a lovely reflective lustre. The outer lavender-lilac zones can be 6 mm deep and these colours are also present on the intersecting internal cleavage planes. Such colour-zoned Fluorites from Illinois are always a delight and this small cabinet specimen is certainly one! The accompanying video shows this specimen in white LED light and ultraviolet light. The fluorescent colour bands and ones are striking, with lilac faces framed around their edges with bright white lines and finally, around the prism edges, broad bands of fluorescent inky sky blue.
