Primary Malachite
A superb specimen of primary Malachite crystals, very lustrous and dark emerald-green, consisting of many intergrown sharply formed flat triangles from Mashamba West mine in the Kolwezi mining district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The crystals have a triangular appearance because of the the way they have intergrown. They are deep bottle-green along the edges, in fact, almost black and measure up to 1.6 cm on edges. It is quite rare to find primary Malachite crystals, particularly with sharp crystals, although this location is known for producing superb Malachite. The term ‘primary’ simply indicates the natural crystal habit of Malachite, so differentiating it from its more common mode of occurrence as, say, pseudomorphs, for example. Depending on how the specimen is lit, the lustre varies between that of glass and velvet. \n
