This beautifully crystallised miniature Hematite is from the Casa de Pedra mine in Congonhas do Campo, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This mine is one of Brazil's largest open pits and has operated continuously since 1947. Superb equant blocky Hematite crystals almost completely encrust a largely hidden matrix of massive Hematite, with large crystals on the display face and much smaller crystals on that opposite. The jet-black trigonal crystals appear almost pseudo-cubic, but with greatly modified faces and are complexly intergrown. All have completely smooth faces and a mirror-like lustrous metallic reflectance. A magnificent miniature and a first rate example for this mine.
