This fantastic cabinet specimen of crystallised Malachite, what is often termed Primary Malachite, is from the historic city of Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The city now covers almost 44 square miles but has a mining history which dates to at least the Iron Age (450 BCE) and the Roman conquest of this region in around 100 BCE. Many of these ancient mines now lie within the city bounds. The deep emerald green acicular crystals of Malachite form rosettes of up to 2 cm diameter throughout an approximately 9.5 x 3 cm vug in a Goethite-Limonite nodule of bright rusty ochre, orange and chocolate brown. The Malachite crystals are transparent to gemmy and sparkle due to their bright lustre. Crystallised Malachite like this is relatively rare because the species typically forms as massive banded deposits with characteristic botryoidal surfaces or often as pseudomorphs. This is a beautiful and world class specimen from this historic mining district of Germany.
