A superb and delightful specimen of the variety of Hematite termed an Iron Rose, from the Ouro Preto mining district in Minas Gerais, Brazil; an area known as the Iron Quadrangle. The overall 'rose' measures 4.7 x 3.5 cm and up to 1.6 cm thick. It is built from metallic black hexagonal platy Hematite crystals in epitaxially-aligned stacks. Individual stacks are of Tower of Babel appearance (like Babel quartz). The back of the specimen exhibits natural etching which reveals complex growth patterns within the Hematite structure.
