Chondrodite
Chondrodite, a magnesium fluorosilicate and member of the Humite Group of minerals, is not a rare mineral on a world scale, but good crystals are rare. The Tilly Foster Iron mine at Brewster in Putnam County, New York, USA, is one of only couple of places where good, gemmy crystals are known. It worked a large iron ore deposit and featured in a special edition of the Mineralogical Record in late 2016 (Vol.47, No.6). Like many a well-known mine it is infamous for a mining disaster which, in this case, killed 13 miners in 1897. The mine closed shortly afterwards. This large thumbnail specimen displays well crystallized and highly lustrous deep reddish-cinnamon Chondrodite crystals and orange Chondrodite matrix. The largest crystal reaches an impressive 1 cm across, but does have some contact damage on one edge and is naturally fractured. However, its overall shape is excellent. It is quite dark, standing out well against a white background of Quartz/Calcite and many other smaller, gemmy Chondrodite crystals contrast nicely against the milky-white vein.
