Hematite on Quartz
Wheal Cock was part of the Botallack mine sett and is the type locality for Botallackite. The surface workings are perched on the cliff tops overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, about 6 km northwest of the village of Botallack. Wheal Cock has 48 recorded mineral species and this excellent miniature Quartz crystal, richly coated in lustrous black Hematite crystals, is a fine example of both species. A typically Cornish looking specimen, it exudes the appearance of minerals from this part of the rugged coastline. Measuring 5.2 x 3.1 x 2.7 cm, the translucent to opaque Quartz crystal stands vertically mounted on a square acrylic base. Relatively thick-set, black metallic Hematite crystals of the variety Specularite richly coat two of the Quartz's six prism faces and contrast against the surface coating of dark mustard tan limonite. A showy miniature from Wheal Cock.
