Tucson, Arizona, USADare I declare this is a beast of a specimen, but beastly in a magnificent sense you understand! The oversize Chalcopyrite crystals are amazing and form a variety of crystal habits including some which appear cubic and orthorhombic. The Chalcopyrite crystals can reach 5 cm across and are separated only by pervasive metallic black Sphalerite crystals and small clusters of colourless to milk acicular Quartz crystals. This spectacular large cabinet specimen is from the Dal'negorsk mining district in the Far-Eastern Region of Russia. Russia, the largest country in the world, at this point sits adjacent to the Sea of Japan. I am informed the flight time between nearby Vladivostok to Moscow is almost 10 hours. That is one mighty big country! The Chalcopyrite is a metallic, bright and lustrous brassy gold, often displaying a slight iridescent patina. The Sphalerite also displays peacock colours of metallic blue and pink on rounded crystals which can develop to 1.5 cm. It is a stupendous specimen that will make a talking point in any collection. It takes little imagination to realise this is quite a heavyweight, being large and composed almost entirely of metal sulphides, so it may carry a little additional postage cost to that of the more standard specimen.
