An exceptionally fine specimen of Mimetite with Cerussite from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia. As all collectors of Tsumeb know, both species are common throughout the mine, but on a few occasions over its 100 years of operation, several remarkable Mimetite pockets were discovered. This specimen cannot be readily attributed to a particular pocket, but it likely does so, based on the habit and quality of these crystals. The matrix is typical pinkish-light grey Dolomite country rock forming a flat plate with a short L-shape lip along one end and dusted in micro-crystals (sub-mm) of colourless curved rhombohedral Dolomite crystals. Three Mimetite crystals dominate the specimen, forming a closely spaced line-up! Each Mimetite is hexagonal and exceptionally stubby, with the prismatic termination being the prevailing feature. Their colour is a slightly acidic buttery-lemon yellow with a glassy lustre, the latter enhanced at the terminations because the crystal faces become smoother. Their short prisms form frayed pagoda-like parallel towers which gradually diminish in area, so morphing into the smaller hexagonal prismatic termination. The Mimetite is surrounded by small colourless glassy cerussite crystals which add to the overall aesthetic. Without doubt, a striking Tsumeb Mimetite with Cerussite.
