A small cabinet Epidote with Actinolite from the Knappenwand in the Untersulzbach Valley, a locality approximately midway between Salzburg and Innsbruck, Austria. This deposit was discovered in 1865 where an aplite vein traverses an epidote-amphibolite sequence. Translucent to transparent bottle green Epidote crystals to about 3.5 cm form a semi-reticulated elongated group. Across two sides very fine acicular needles of Actinolite form silky light peppermint green nested clusters of the variety known as Byssolite. These micro-crystals are matted together forming a densely packed mass of Byssolite with a resultant silky lustre. A splendid specimen from the Knappenwand.
