Groups of deep green transparent Fluorite crystals to 1.8 cm sit on a carpet of smaller crystals coating an ironstone matrix which has a rich orange limonitic stain, revealed between the two largest groups of crystals. Originally coated in a thick crust of Calcite which has been chemically removed in the 1970s. This cabinet specimen is from the West String, No. 1 level (top level) of the Greenbank Vein, Rogerley mine near to Frosterley in Weardale. The larger crystals form interpenetrant twins and the edges of these naturally fluoresce purple in direct daylight. Under LWUV all the Fluorite crystals fluoresce bright bluish white. This specimen was mined circa 1976 by the Cumbria Mining and Mineral Company. It was in the Lindsay Greenbank Collection and is accompanied with his card label, numbered L.G. 444.
