Chalcedony from Trevascus mine at Carnhell Green, between Camborne and Hayle in Cornwall is readily recognisable for its delicate rope-like structures, translucency and creamy to burnt-tan colour. Trevascus was a tin and copper mine which operated for a very brief period closing around 1842 but having already become famous for its amazing and unique Chalcedony specimens. These are now held in high esteem as true Cornish classics. This is an exceptionally good example with a multitude of 1 to 3 mm diameter ropes covering two opposite display surfaces with an aesthetic, waxy lustre. The specimen dates clearly from a very old collection apparent from a glued-on handwritten label with blue printed border, typical of collections within the Victorian era.
