Pyromorphite
Although visitors are still free to explore every inch of the Caldbeck Fells and its world-famous mining landscape, collecting of mineral specimens has long since been strictly forbidden. The Roughton Gill area is renowned for its wonderful Pyromorphite which can vary greatly in crystal habit and colour, making it a favourite amongst collectors. This delightful miniature is a complete mass of mainly bright, acidic lime green acicular crystals up to 1.5 cm long, occurring as an intergrown tangled porous mass. The Pyromorphite crystals envelop all surfaces although, as one would anticipate, many on the base are broken. Over an approximately 1.8 x 1 cm area the Pyromorphite becomes acidic yellow to orange, probably approaching Mimetite in composition. A splendid specimen, probably collected around the mid twentieth century.
