The municipality of Diamantina in Minas Gerais, Brazil, although known for its diamond bearing ground (and hence its name), hosts almost 30 other minerals amongst which some are extremely well crystallised. This captivating, museum grade group of Quartz crystals is of gem quality and can rightly be classed as the variety Rock Crystal. The colourless Quartz crystals are superb and plentiful, emerging from a mostly hidden matrix of opaque milky Quartz. The crystals project mainly vertically from the matrix, yet several, especially around the edges slant to almost 45 degrees. The Quartz crystals tend to be tall and slender, some attaining over 10 cm in length and of perfect optical clarity, save for a little surface frosting on the prism faces. One shorter yet thicker-set crystal displays a magnificent Dauphin' habit termination. Some crystals show the Tessin habit while some modify the Tessin to become transitional. Enough said, its better explained by studying the accompanying photos! A show-stopping aesthetic group of beautifully crystallised Quartz from Diamantina in Brazil.
