Elbaite with Quartz Tourmaline

This quite magnificent black-capped pink Elbaite Tourmaline with milky Quartz has the appearance of a scaled down museum specimen. If photographed with no reference as for scale, it might appear a foot high! It is in fact an overall 5.8 cm tall, but perhaps even more perfect for this. Two Elbaite prisms emerge from a milky Quartz matrix, essentially composed of two nicely terminated semi-translucent Quartz crystals, one 5 cm long and the other 1.6 cm. Many small milky Quartz crystals surround the large crystals with some attached to a prism face of the large Elbaite. The largest of these smaller Quartz crystals are about 8 mm long and these are double terminated. Books of white Muscovite mica are also scattered over the Quartz. The main Elbaite prism measures 4.0 x 3.5 x 2.7 cm overall and the smaller, approximately 2 x 2 x 2 cm, although a good part of this disappears within the Quartz. This specimen is from Barra de Salinas in the mineral and gem-rich state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Both Elbaite crystals have an essentially black dominant inner core which occupies most of each crystal's volume. This is only apparent in the base. The colour may be an intense navy blue, but certainly manifests as coal-black. Covering and masking this is a 2 mm thick rind of mottled rich bubble gum to pale candy-pink Elbaite, around their bases mixed a little with the darker inner core. The prims terminate with flat pinacoids of matt black, just 1 mm deep, but impressive and most striking. The pinacoid surfaces are naturally etched crystallised surfaces and in various patches allow the underlying pink Tourmaline to show.
