Elbaite with Quartz Tourmaline

The Pederneira mine in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has become one of the most famous Tourmaline localities in the world because of its spectacular gem pockets and following the article with accompanying DVD in the Mineralogical Record (V.46, No.1, 2015). This is an unusual and highly aesthetic miniature of a 5.4 cm tall, by 0.7 x 0.7 cm, gemmy Elbaite Tourmaline crystal of leafy-lime green sandwiched between two highly distorted and flattened transparent to semi-transparent Quartz crystals. Another smaller but unterminated Elbaite crystal, 3.5 cm tall, sits against the Elbaite; on the reverse side of the Quartz is a horizontal 2.9 cm long Elbaite, again unterminated with a similar 2.0 cm long Elbaite on the right. The display Elbaite has a steep-sided trigonal pyramidal termination and vertically striated prism faces. The combination of green Elbaite crystals with the rather delightful Quartz crystals is fabulous and breath taking.
