NATIVE Silver
Uchucchacua mine in the high Andes mountains in Oyon Province, Lima Department, Peru is one of the most important mineralogical sites in South America. In operation almost continually from 1975, it has not only has it produced some of the world's best Rhodochrosite and Alabandite specimens, but it is the Type Locality to ten species - mostly exceptionally rare silver-manganese-lead sulphosalt species. As a silver mine Native Silver specimens are not at all common - most of the ore being complex sulphosalts and sulphides. However, a few fine world-class Native Silver specimens have been recovered as wire specimens and crystallized masses. The best specimens appear to have been collected during a narrow window in time during the early 2000s. This dramatic sculptural miniature specimen of wire Native Silver features a three-dimensional 'sea serpent' rising from a crystalline Siderite matrix. The wire is 2 cm tall, but if laid out straight would reach an impressive 5.5 cm in length. Few Peruvian Native Silver's can boast the character of this beauty, and although small for display, it is a cracker.
