Tucson, Arizona, USAA thin yet strong matrix plate is encrusted with micro-crystals of light to mid apple green Cuprian Smithsonite over which sit splendid deep smoky grey Cerussite crystals with a mirror-like glassy lustre. This outstanding miniature is from the Tsumeb mine in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. The lead carbonate Cerussite is found abundantly throughout the mine right down to and including the 3rd Oxidation Zone, which extends from 42 Level down to around 1,500 m below surface datum. The Cerussite forms double terminated crystals to over 2 cm with hexagonal prisms and steep pyramidal terminations. The contrast of the smoky translucent Cerussite against the Cuprian Smithsonite is beautiful. Just to add that extra touch, the underside of the base is entirely encrusted with 1 to 2 mm rusty pumpkin-orange Smithsonite crystals. A great and most attractive specimen.
