Fluorite with Galena
This undoubtedly very old cabinet sized display specimen of northern English Fluorite and Galena specimen is in very good condition and has some quite distinctive features. Abundant intergrown interpenetrant twins of deep purple cubic Fluorite crystals typically measuring over 1 cm on edge, but exceptionally to 1.9 cm, with green cores are developed as a thick layer upon a distinctive Limestone matrix impregnated with disseminated brown Sphalerite. Three very unusual partly skeletal bright silvery-grey cubic crystals of Galena to 2 cm across are sat, spaced out, between the Fluorite crystals on the display surface. The Fluorite crystals display remarkably little damage for its age - damage around the periphery off the specimen and a few tiny nicks to crystal edges and the Galena crystals are in fine shape too. The Fluorite is not glassy, but has a slightly matt surface with internal translucency. A small number of the crystals show internal frosting, especially in one small area at one end of the specimen. The Fluorite, as one would expect, displays extremely bright violet fluorescence under longwave UV light and strong daylight fluorescence bringing out a certain vibrancy to the purple colour. Ex Shields & Frances Flynn collection, it is accompanied by a very old and fragile label stating "Fluorspar & Galena Cumberland E...". It is most likely from one of the older mines in Weardale, Co. Durham, but could be from the border region with Cumbria (Cumberland) near Nenthead and Alston.
