Bixbyite

A fine example of the rare manganese oxide Bixbyite from the Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah, USA. A single 5 x 5 x 5 mm cubic crystal with corners modified slightly to the octahedron perches on a micro-vuggy cream matrix of rhyolite. The black Bixbyite crystal has mirror-smooth faces and a brilliant glassy lustre. The specific Type Locality for Bixbyite is Maynard's mine, also in the Thomas Range. A terrific example of this uncommon species.
