A rare specimen of the zinc-iron sulphide Wurtzite from South mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Creamy to pastel yellow-green Wurtzite mostly covers stacked micro-crystals of Galena, forming stalactitic structures. South mine began in 1885 on the central section of the Broken Hill line of lode, that section of the exposed anticline whose structure hosted the various ore bodies. If you look-up Broken Hill South Mine in mindat, an excellent account of the naming of the various mining operations around this region of the line of lode may just help to correctly label some of your Broken Hill specimens. The accompanying video shows this specimen in white LED light and ultraviolet light. The Wurtzite fluoresces a pale yet distinct greenish-yellow, contrasting well against the non-fluorescent Galena.
