Sometimes mineral descriptions need to begin with 'oh what a beauty', and this Australian Pyromorphite is certainly one! From the world-famous MMM mine at Broken Hill in New South Wales, this is one of those clove brown Pyromorphites which appears to have at least three generations of crystal growth. Covering an almost 12 x 7 cm matrix of grey Quartz mixed with Galena, Sphalerite and Smithsonite, tiny 1 mm, almost black Pyromorphite crystals form a sooty yet partly glittering surface, overgrown by single Pyromorphite crystals to 1.8 x 0.8 x 0.5 cm, often coated in a cactus-like radial growth of spiky Pyromorphite crystals of between 4 to 7 mm long. It is a busy specimen which makes your eye jump around. Its dark colours may make it a beast to some collectors, but to Pyromorphite and Broken Hill connoisseurs alike it is a true beauty.
