Gypsum
This spectacular and rather unusual cabinet specimen of snow white opaque Gypsum is from the Cavnic mine, in the Cavnic mining district, situated a little to the north east of the town of Cavnic in Maramure? County, Romania. This famous group of mines lie in the Carpathian Mountains and hosts one of the largest polymetallic reserves in Romania. The Gypsum forms perfect crystals to 3 cm long which are opaque and pure snow white with a completely matt lustre. The crystals form two branching clusters measuring 6 and 5 cm wide respectively on top of a broad plate-like rib of Quartz coated with a granular layer of mottle white and tan Gypsum. The Gypsum clusters look like flowers blossoming on the matrix's surface and when stood vertically it makes a most imposing specimen. This is accompanied with the previous collector's label.
