Grossular Garnet
This is a glistening specimen of solid garnet crystals upon massive garnet, with scintillating, sparkly crystals shooting out in every direction! Rock Currier had an incredible collection overall, made of suites of suites. He had an entire drawer devoted to the variety of grossular garnet coming out of the asbestos mine in Quebec in the time in which he was himself actively collecting (Rock used his business Jewel Tunnel Imports, to fund his massive collection building; eventually leading to the sale over auctions and liquidations after he passed away). His label indicates that he acquired this in 1972 - and it has been with him since. In his words, “A 3.5 inch mound of intergrown gemmy orange/brown crystals so typical of the kind that Asbestos produces. The crystals are up to about .75 inch and some of them are gem quality. Bought from Bruno Carriere, a miner at Asbestos in the open pit mine.” Specimens of this size, richness, and provenance are few. RHC#1687, it also comes with a laminated display label of the type Rock and others used in their competitive exhibits in the 1960s-1970s. I expect this was in one of his numerous Tucson show display cases at one time.
