Chalcocite (twinned)
A superb large thumbnail example of one of the classics of 1800s mineralogy and mineral collecting, the classic copper species chalcocite, from the region at the heart of England's Industrial Revolution. A distinctive prismatic twinned black crystal stands dramatically in front of a taller black crystal, all accented and surrounded at the bottom by a matrix of more crystallized chalcocite; matrix specimens of any kind are rare and desirable! From: Cal Graeber - September 19, 1996. Formerly, in the George Holloway collection (Los Angeles). Exhibited: One of the 35 displayed specimens that won the 2010 Paul Desautel Trophy for Best Mineral Case in Competition at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. Mark Mauthner photo (#018272). We cannot emphasize enough the significance of this fine, old survivor. This is literally a style and location that defined a twinning habit of chalcocite known as "drillbit twins" in the early days of crystallography.
