Rhodochrosite with Hubnerite, Quartz, Apatite
This unique rhodochrosite miniature is one I have always remembered since the first time I had it in the mid 1990s. It is SH2698, under 3000 in the count of fine specimens recovered from Sweet Home back in the glory days of the mid to late 1990s and when each pocket had a name. For me, this is when the best material came out. This piece is memorable for the sharp form, intense color (a fine and rich full ripened strawberry saturation), crystal shape, and also the overall aesthetics of course. However it is the associations and overall assembly that makes a difference and takes this to another level of play. It is accented by hubnerite crystals, an incredibly rare association for the mine. The contrasts of hubnerite, pyrite, and quartz sparkles on the sides makes the red stand out more. It is translucent throughout and without any notable damage. It is also a piece not worked by modern labs for improvement with chemistry or treatments, which sometimes over-improve. This is natural, and proudly so. It has no repairs or restorations. Interestingly, in checking that it remains unrepaired now, 20 years after the last time I sold the specimen, I realized something on the bottom was fluorescent — it is Apatite crystals! We have never had anything quite comparable to the mix of qualities here, in this size and price range. It is a really special treasure from the heyday of the Sweet Home, just the right size for a competitive full miniature.
