Pyrrhotite is not normally accorded the status it deserves as an important metallic species, simply because most of the specimens do not seem to have the aesthetics we demand and ask for in other metallic species such as pyrite and hematite. And yet, pyrrhotite is a very important economic and ore mineral, and a common specimen mineral in low quality. Here is an old specimen from Dalnegorsk, from 1990s era mining, that shows unusually fine aesthetics that takes it to the upper levels of what is possible for the species in this size range if you want aesthetic, refined style of crystals on matrix. It features a sharp, complete, 360 degree rosette of pyrrhotite perched atop a natural and elegant pedestal of matrix. Admittedly, it is highly unlikely and looked repaired or put together, but is entirely natural! Such a specimen, with a perfect floating crystal on display, is simply not the usual sort of aesthetics we see from Dalnegorsk. It was from the heyday here, after the West opened and new mining flooded the market with cheap Russian minerals in the 1990s - things we simply do not see today. Even then, this would have been a rare find. From the noted collection of Paul Stahl, well known for his taste and access to specimens of quality in the miniature and small cabinet size range, to collector Gabriel Risse.
