Molybdenite on Quartz
I value this specimen highly for its quality in and of itself, but also its significance as a USA locale and species. Emplaced high on its massive quartz matrix, is a beautifully formed, doubly terminated, splendent, silvery gray crystal of molybdenite crystal, measuring 4.9 cm in length. The crystal is not only huge for such a sharp Molybdenite from any locale, particularly for a USA locale, but it is SHARP on the edges in a way rarely seen in this species. Discernible growth striations are clearly visible at the crystal edges and add interest. Mined July 31, 1974, and self collected by well known field collector Bob Bartsch. I obtained it from his estate through his friend Rock Currier (now also deceased), when the collection passed to Rock to handle. Remarkably, it is not repaired. Most recently for the last 6 years or so, this was in the Dr. Rob Woodside collection in Vancouver, and is illustrated in Mineralogical Record's Mineral Collections of the Pacific Northwest, Sept-Oct 2019, page 173.
