Quartz (beta style)

From Dalnegorsk, one of the great mines of the latter 20th century, this is a SUPERB Quartz specimen featuring an unusual style of quartz often referred to as Beta-like or Cumberland-like habit. Without understanding the details of the crystal faces, even the casual observer can see these are strange, not the usual quartz style! They resemble unusual high temperature quartzes classified as slightly different in crystallography terms, regarding the faces, for reasons that I think nobody fully understands. Sharp, very glassy, and translucent, these bi-pyramidal Quartz crystals are clustered on a gossan-like matrix, which they stand out against beautifully. The largest crystal, doubly-terminated, is an impressive 3.5 cm tip-to-tip. One termination has a distinct notch in it, which adds even more to the already impressive and enchanting aesthetics. This is a very fine example of this rare Quartz habit from Dalnegorsk. It is older, from the 1980s or 1990s, and seldom seen in such isolated and dramatic presentation as we get here.
