We always look for unusual fluorites and 2007/8 saw the surprising and noteworthy discovery of attractive, and rare, botryoidal Fluorites in China. Up until this time, the best-known botryoidal Fluorites were probably the golden-honey spheres from India, but these bluish-purple Fluorites have an entirely unique aesthetic. Not only is the color unusual and appealing for this habit, but the super-fine, velvety luster gives the spheres a nicely-defined visual texture that almost makes you want to reach out and caress the surface (similar to the temptation of an Okenite). The largest sphere is about 2.4 cm across, and while the Fluorites do have some translucense, in this case the particularly-rich color wins out. Rare in form and color, these Fluorites created quite the stir when this find was made. Excellent, aesthetic examples such as this small cabinet piece, with its fine color and great balance, serve to enhance their reputation even more. Please note, this seems to photo extraordinarily well in our photo lights, but is a bit diminished in color in room lighting (compare to video in LED lighting). It is purple, but only glows strongly with good backlighting. The final photo shows what it looks like after a quick wash, while wet. Gorgeous!
