Babingtonite from this old New England locale is difficult to come by and yet a very few can be exceptional for the species - making them USA classics when in such a quality. This particular specimen is, indeed, a competitive level thumbnail specimen not only for the classic USA locality, but for anywhere, and can easily go in a thumbnail collection as a pinnacle piece for the species. Some of these Babingtonites date back to the early 1900s, but this one was collected in 1999 according to label on bottom (by whom, we do not know???). This is a showy cluster of satin to slightly glossy, jet-black crystals to 2.4 cm that are perched on just a touch of green Prehnite for accent and contrast. This is a nice open cluster that shows off the eight or so sharply formed crystals very well. Good 3-dimensional specimens like this are very hard to come by, especially with the prehnite association. From the East Coast collection of George Elling.
