Rhodochrosite (1960s-70s era)
Here is a large and luscious, translucent, rich pink-red Rhodochrosite rhomb from one of the ultimate localities for the species from finds in the late 1960s and early 1970s (mostly by Richard Kosnar). This crystal measures two inches across the diagonal and an inch in thickness. The crystal is nicely translucent so it glows, and with backlighting it erupts with color. The bounding faces and edges of the Rhodochrosite are very well formed and have good luster. There is a smaller (just over an inch) Rhodo sidecar stepped out to one side of the crystal and there is a small (half-inch diagonal) complete Rhodochrosite crystal attached at the bottom growing out an angle to the main crystal for added aesthetics. The back of the large crystal as well as the larger sidecar have slightly milky surface texture, while the other faces have good luster or a slight satin luster. The rhomb is complete in its entirety and the two accompanying crystals add interest and aesthetics. A great older Rhodochrosite from the Sweet Home Mine with a unique and more "jolly rancher" style to it than modern specimens. This is a big single, at 92 grams
