Here are very unusually shaped, large, juicy and gemmy strawberry-pink Rhodochrosite from the Wutong Mine, China. In China, Rhodos from this find are treated like gold and very rarely seen today. In the USA, they are also scarce because what came out promptly went into collections and has not started recycling yet (this was about ten years ago, prior to 2010). This piece, even in the heyday when many came out, would have been considered very unusual: These Rhodochrosite crystals are translucent to transparent, big and luscious..so different from the usual opaque disc-like, moderate pink Wutong Rhodos that have been seen more commonly; and these are really more reminiscent of the pink alpine Fluorites from France in color. Individual modified rhombs in this extended cluster range from 1 to just over 3cm! They have lustrous faces and exhibit very fine, stepped growth patterns. There are a few areas that have small clusters of 2mm, pale lavender Fluorite crystals along with some minor Pyrite in association. Pyrite is more prominent in one area on the backside of the piece. Absolutely no damage to these Gorgeous Rhodos and the only contact is the back, where it was removed from the pocket! Superb specimen, of a rare crystal habit from a rare find! Formerly in the William Logan Rhodochrosite collection.
