This is a remarkably large, lustrous, nearly perfect octahedron of Franklinite from the type locality at Franklin, New Jersey. This big crystal from the Chester Lemanski collection measures nearly 10 cm on its longest edge and is about 90% complete with contacting on what we would interpret as its back and then one corner and an edge are dinged but doesn't affect the impressiveness of this piece. The big octahedron is charcoal black with a great sub-metallic luster and has several well-developed faces and edges. This monster weighs over 5 pounds! Crystals of this size and quality are extraordinary today and rarely seen on the market. Ex. Chester Lemanski collection F1347, and remarkably self-collected at the North end, East vein, 430' level, on 6/23/1991 with this note: A specimen comprised of a free-standing, octahedral franklinite crystal brought out of the mine by myself on 6/23/91 in about 100 lbs Of matrix. Crystal broken free. This is a remarkable large single crystal! 2370 grams.
