Discovered all the way back in 1873 as a mine for silver ore, the Sweet Home mine was worked intermittently with moderate success until closing in 1967. With an investment from a well-known dealer in the early 1990s, The Sweet Home mine reopened as a specimen mine which produced world-class rhodochrosites until the mid 2000s, many of which now lie in museum and private collections all across the world, and became a household name in the mineral collecting community. This thumbnail is an adorable combination is a sculptural mass of two pink rhodochrosite crystals with lustrous, clear quartz crystals growing in between. An affordable piece for a locality that has only become more expensive over the years!
