An excellent specimen from the type locality! Yellow-orange, crystals of greenockite to 2 mm nestled in a vug in basalt with white prehnite. Greenockite is a rare cadmium sulfide and member of the Wurtzite Group. Ex. W. F. Davidson, and Simon Harrison collections with labels. I have seen only three of these for sale in my time as a mineral dealer, in decades. They are extraordinarily hard to come by today. This is actually a good display specimen for the material. Per MINDAT: Named in 1840 by Henry James Brooke and Arthur Connell for Lord Greenock - later Earl Charles Murray Cathcart, 2nd Earl Cathcart December 21, 1783 Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, England, UK - July 16, 1859 St Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, England, UK. Earl Charles Murray Cathcart was a general in the British army and served as Governor of the Province of Canada. He was also author of two papers: one on igneous rocks in Edinburgh, Scotland and one on coal in the southern Scotland.
