The old Avant quarry has recently been reworked with more robust equipment, and a backhoe was brought in to access a deposit at 25 foot depth that had not been mined before except by sampling. Shockingly deep green wavellite was found, much of it in small, closely packed seams. We will have an update of the remaining material later. With its bright and sparkling luster atop, this rolling velvety mat of botryoidal wavellite in a 3-dimensional crevasse is the largest fine specimen of this quality that was recovered in 3 months of mining (during summer of 2010). It is dramatic, huge, and really singificant both for the locality and for the species, as an American classic. I am not aware of old material from the glory days here (1960s and prior), collected at shallower depth, that matched this color intensity. Joe Budd photos
