Long before the profusion of specimens from from Tasmania, this venerable old mine was the type locality for crocoite, prior to 1811, when a fine specimen appeared in Sowerby's "Exotic Mineralogy." These, equant, lustrous, translucent, reddish-orange, crocoite crystals, to 1.0 cm in length, are emplaced on a limonite matrix. I generally prefer these Russian specimens to those from Tasmania because they are not elongated with hollow terminations like those from the Red Lead Mine and others. Also, this specimen came from the collection of prominent American mineral enthusiast, William Vaux, in the late 1800s. This is his own personal label and handwriting. As well as being a rare old classic, it is really aesthetic as well! 5.6 x 3.7 x 3.1 cm
