Some of the most classic Magnetites from North America are those from Balmat, New York. These are some of the most distinctive and eye-catching Magnetite specimens in the world due to their cubic habit. This piece is filled with rarely seen cubic crystals (with very slight tetrahexahedral modifications) on a massive Quartz matrix. I'm told that these specimens were mined in the early 1990s, and are not commonly available today, especially in cabinet-sized specimens such as this one. Most of the pieces I have seen from Balmat are either thumbnails or miniatures. The crystals on this specimen, despite having some contacts, are incredibly sharp for the species, with great luster. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
